Wang Kelian 2008: The Greatest Find

3

During the Wesak Day weekend (May 16-19, 2008), my dad and I traveled back to his hometown in Arau, Perlis, for the birthday of the Raja Perlis. It is not very often that my dad goes back to his birthplace, but when he does, it’s about once or twice a year, and I usually accompany him. Perlis is the smallest state in Malaysia, and it is the northern-most state, bordering Thailand. Little did I realize that the smallest state in Malaysia has the most technical and fastest road I have ever riden in Malaysia to date! The location of the … Continue reading

2007 IGSA Alpspeed Downhill World Cup

7

Venue: Thun, Switzerland Date: July 18-21, 2007 After the Almabtrieb race was over, my dad and I hitched a ride back from Jungholz to Zurich, again with Nino Zeke. Luis Lins, Bettina Luginbuhl, and Jojo Linder also hitched a ride back with us. The van was big enough for all of us. The drive back to Zurich was about 4 hours! When we finally arrived in Zurich, Nino dropped each one of the riders at their houses. They’re all close buddies who skate together in Zurich, so they all know each other. I think they all represent Roll Laden, a … Continue reading

May 2008 Update

8

It has been quite a while since I posted the last article here on this website. I guess I should be taking advantage of the fact that my website now uses PHP/MySQL and updating it more frequently since it uses a database. But we all know how busy life can get at times. Work gets in the way, and when it isn’t work, it’s going out there and actually riding! I have not been putting up articles on my recent activities as they happen. So, I am going to post some pictures from those riding sessions as they happened over … Continue reading

2007 IGSA Almabtrieb World Championship

Venue: Jungholz, Austria Date: July 11-14, 2007 This year, there would be 4 IGSA World Cups in Europe. The IGSA World Cup tour would have kicked off in Sweden, but that event was canceled. The next World Cup would be the Almabtrieb World Championship in Jungholz, Austria. This event kicked off the 2007 IGSA World Cup Series. What made this trip more special was that my dad was going to come along to watch me race street luge for the first time. The trip started out by taking a Malaysia Airlines flight from Kuala Lumpur on July 10 to Zurich, … Continue reading

Merdeka 50 Freeride

In commemoration of Malaysia’s 50th Independence, THP paid tribute to the country by doing what we do best, and that is riding street luge in Malaysia. As Malaysia’s only street luge riders, we face difficult challenges in making the sport grow in the country. Well, all that has changed now. Back in February earlier this year, I appeared in a local Malaysian newspaper, Berita Harian. One brave soul from Johor contacted me and expressed his interest to get into the sport. After selling one of my classic luges to him, he took initiative and went practicing on his own. After … Continue reading

2007 Alpspeed Results

l229

The 2007 IGSA Alpspeed World Cup in Thun, Switzerland has been a very interesting and dramatic race. With rain threatening the 4-day long event in the late afternoons and evenings starting from Thursday, July 19, 2007, the street luge riders were at the mercy of the wet road during qualifying. During the race however, the weather turned out for the better and the road was dry for the street luge race, with imminent rain looming over the horizon during the consolation and the final. The classic luge race was canceled due to heavy pouring rain that would prove to be … Continue reading

Training for Europe 2007

The IGSA World Cup mayhem in July is now less than a month away. There will be 4 World Cup events all distributed within a one month span. The events will be held in Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, and Austria. I will be going to the 2007 IGSA Almabtrieb World Championship in Jungholz, Austria (July 11-14), and the 2007 IGSA Alpspeed Downhill World Cup in Thun, Switzerland (July 18-22). With airfare prices increasing from last year, it seemed perfect sense to attend more than one race, to make the trip more economical, worthwhile, as well as time and money well spent. … Continue reading

Scouting hills in Penang

1

Team rider William Robyn came down to Malaysia from France to do his 6-month internship at a German company named Schott in Penang. On July 30, 2006, William and I went to scout a hill in Penang that we found on Google Earth. This hill is located in Kampung Sungai Ara located near Bukit Jambul. The course measures 1 km in length and is quite interesting, featuring a large right-hand sweeper, one 90-degree left-hand turn, and one nice large right-hand hairpin, all separated by straight-aways. The only bad thing about this course is that there are these so-called speed bumps … Continue reading

Fresh off his win at Top Challenge, John Fryer brought his momentum to Bainbridge, Ohio and stole the show. Posting the top qualifying run in both luge and buttboard, he was the man to beat on Sunday. However, Dave Auld, Bill Smrtic and hometown hero David Dean had other plans. Eventually, it was Fryer’s weekend, taking the top spot in both buttboard and street luge.
